On this day in 1776 The United States Declaration of Independence was signed by the Second Continental Congress declaring itself free of British rule and taxation. The 13 colonies in America met in Philadelphia to sign this Declaration of Independence. On this day in 1777 John Paul Jones hoists the first Stars and Stripes flag on Ranger at Portsmouth, NH. In 1802 on this day at West Point, New York the United States Military Academy opens its doors for the first time. In 1826 John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States, respectively, died on this day, the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. In 1831 on this day James Monroe 5th president of the United State dies. In 1884 on this day the Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States in Paris. In 1959 on this day with the admission of Alaska as the 49th U.S. state earlier in the year, the 49-star flag of the United States debuts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And, in 1960 on this day due to the post-Independence Day admission of Hawaii as the 50th U.S. state on August 21, 1959, the 50-star flag of the United States debuts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania almost ten and a half months later.
